How to convert EPUB to KEPUB for Kobo

Converting an epub to kepub gives you better page turns, accurate reading stats, and smoother pagination on a Kobo. Here are three ways to do it, from easiest to most technical.

1. In your browser

The quickest option is the converter on this site. Nothing to install, and it works on any computer or phone.

  1. Open the EPUB to KEPUB converter.
  2. Drag your epub onto the box, or click to choose it.
  3. It converts in a moment and downloads a .kepub.epub file.
  4. Copy that file to your Kobo over USB or through your cloud folder.

There is no account, no size limit, and nothing to install. This is the right choice for most people.

2. With Calibre and a plugin

If you already manage your library in Calibre, you can convert to kepub there with a plugin.

  1. Install Calibre, then add the KoboTouchExtended driver plugin from Calibre's plugin list.
  2. With the plugin installed, sending a book to a connected Kobo can convert it to kepub on the way, depending on your settings.
  3. Newer Calibre versions can also produce kepub directly during conversion.

This is handy if Calibre is already part of your routine, but it is more setup than most people need for a single book.

3. On the command line

There is a well-known open-source tool called kepubify by Patrick Gaskin that converts epub to kepub from the command line. It is fast and scriptable, which suits batch jobs and people who are comfortable in a terminal. For a one-off book it is more than you need, but it is worth knowing it exists.

After you convert

Once you have your kepub file, get it onto the device. See the guide on putting books on your Kobo for the USB and wireless methods, or set up automatic cloud sync so new books arrive on their own.

Not sure whether you even need kepub? The EPUB vs KEPUB guide explains what changes and when it matters.
